Conservation at Scuba Nomad

Reef conservation is part of our everyday work in Roatan. Together with Caribbean Reef Guardians, we support coral restoration, care for the main coral nursery located in front of our base, help with educational programs in local schools, and teach Reef Guardian I & II courses.

Working Together for Roatan’s Reefs

Caribbean Reef Guardians was founded by Chantal and Paco to protect and restore Roatan’s coral reefs through hands-on conservation, education and community involvement.

Luca and Natalia have been involved with the project since the beginning of its restoration work, from the first coral fragments onward.

Today, Scuba Nomad actively supports Caribbean Reef Guardians through nursery care, boat and facility support, Reef Guardian training, and participation in educational programs in local schools.

Conservation in Action

Our involvement is hands-on — from helping build and install coral nurseries to maintaining them in the water and teaching divers how to better understand and protect the reef.

We Help Build It

We have been involved from the first coral fragments, helping with the hands-on work behind the restoration project and the construction of coral nursery structures.

We Help Install It

We help place nursery structures in the water and support the work needed to establish them, using our base, boats and dive operations when needed.

We Take Care of It

We regularly support nursery maintenance and monitoring, helping care for growing coral fragments and providing the operational support needed to work on the nursery.

We Educate Divers

Through Reef Guardian I & II courses, we help divers understand how coral reefs function, the challenges they face and how divers can help protect them.

Is Coral an Animal or a Plant?

Coral may look like a plant or even a rock, but it is actually an animal. A coral colony is made up of thousands of tiny animals called polyps, which live together and build the hard structures that form the reef.

Many corals also live in partnership with microscopic algae inside their tissues. These algae use sunlight to produce energy and help feed the coral, while the coral provides them with shelter.

Why Coral Reefs Matter

Coral reefs support an incredible diversity of marine life. In addition, they protect coastlines from waves and erosion. However, these ecosystems face serious threats from climate change, pollution and human activity.

When reefs are damaged by warming seas, disease, pollution or physical impact, the effects reach far beyond the coral itself. Protecting and restoring reefs means protecting the wider marine ecosystem and the people who depend on it.

Education

Protecting Roatan’s reefs also means helping people understand them.
Scuba Nomad supports Caribbean Reef Guardians’ educational work in local schools, helping introduce students to coral reefs, marine ecosystems and the importance of protecting them.

Reef Guardian Training

Scuba Nomad can teach both Reef Guardian courses developed by Caribbean Reef Guardians, combining reef education with practical in-water experience.
